How We Choose Products

The selection method in full, including what we do not do.

Why we say that first

Plenty of sites in this category imply testing they have not done. Phrases like "in our testing" and "we tried" appear on pages that are clearly desk research, and a reader has no way to tell the difference.

We would rather be the site that says plainly what its method is. That means you can weigh our recommendations knowing exactly what they are based on -- and where a competitor genuinely has built 35 composting systems or run multi-month trials with a compost thermometer, you should weigh their hands-on findings above our research.

How a product gets onto a page

  1. 1

It has to be real and currently sold

Every product on this site was confirmed as a currently available model during research. If a product cannot be confirmed as currently sold, it does not go on the page.

  2. 2

It has to fit a defined buyer

Each pick answers a specific situation -- a first bed on open ground, a balcony with no soil, a cold-climate greenhouse. A product that is nobody's best answer does not earn a slot just to round the list up to ten.

  3. 3

Its specifications come from the manufacturer

Material, coating, gauge, dimensions, capacity and glazing thickness are the manufacturer's own published figures. We do not measure them and we do not restate them as if we had.

  4. 4

Its claims get checked against independent sources

Where a claim touches horticulture rather than manufacturing -- root depth, composting ratios, germination temperature, mulch depth -- we cite university cooperative extension publications or published government guidance, linked on the page.

  5. 5

It gets a 'skip it if' line

Every product card names who should not buy it. If we cannot write an honest one, the product does not belong in the roundup.

What the score means

The number on each product card is our editorial judgment of how well that product serves the buyer the page is written for. It is not an aggregated customer rating, it is not a measurement, and it is deliberately never marked up as a rating in the page's structured data -- because a review rating implies a review process we have not run.

Two products can score identically and suit completely different people. The score is a summary of the text, not a substitute for it.

What we will not do

  • Claim hands-on testing, ownership or first-hand use of any product on this site.
  • Invent or estimate a price. There is no live price data here, so every buy button reads "Check price on Amazon" and the retailer shows you the current number.
  • Quote a star rating or a review count. We have not verified them, so we describe products on observable attributes instead -- material, gauge, dimensions, warranty.
  • Publish testimonials. We have none.
  • Rank by commission. Where the cheaper product is the better buy for you, that is what the page says.

They do not. Every product on this site is linked through an Amazon Associates tag, so the commission is effectively the same whichever one you buy -- there is no product we earn meaningfully more from, and therefore no financial reason to rank one above another.

That is a structural safeguard rather than a promise of good character, which is why it is worth stating. The full funding position is on the affiliate disclosure page.

Corrections

We currently cover 40 products. Specifications change, products are discontinued, and we get things wrong. If you find an error, email us and we will correct the page and note that it was updated. The process is set out in the editorial policy.
